Three Singapore-Based Palm Oil Giants Manage 691,417 Hectares of Plantations, with TBS and CPO Production Underpinning Their Business Strength

Palm Oil

Indonesian Palm Oil News (IPO News) — Wilmar International, Bumitama Agri, and First Resources are three major Singapore-based palm oil groups listed on the Singapore Exchange (SGX). Together, they manage approximately 691,417 hectares of planted oil palm estates globally, supported by extensive plantation networks and processing operations in Indonesia.

Indonesia remains a major operational base for these three groups. Backed by plantation assets, palm oil mills (POMs), and extensive product distribution networks, the companies hold strategic positions in the national palm oil industry.

Based on their 2025 annual reports, all three companies demonstrate substantial operational strength. However, their plantation areas and production volumes should be assessed with due consideration to geographical coverage and differences in corporate reporting methodologies.

1. WILMAR INTERNATIONAL: AN INTEGRATED GROUP WITH A GLOBAL BUSINESS NETWORK

Wilmar International is one of Singapore’s largest agribusiness groups and is listed on the Singapore Exchange. The group is associated with the Kuok Group and operates an integrated business model encompassing plantations, palm oil processing, trading, food products, and oleochemicals.

As of the end of 2025, Wilmar had a total planted oil palm area of 234,334 hectares. Approximately 66% of its plantations were located in Indonesia, 25% in East Malaysia, and 9% in Africa.

In Indonesia, Wilmar’s plantations are spread across Sumatra, West Kalimantan, and Central Kalimantan.

In terms of production, Wilmar’s oil palm estates generated approximately 4.04 million tonnes of fresh fruit bunches (FFB) throughout 2025. This represented a decline of around 2% from 4.11 million tonnes in 2024, primarily due to less favourable weather conditions in several operating areas.

Wilmar also operates an extensive network of palm oil mills that process FFB from its own plantations as well as third-party suppliers. According to its 2025 sustainability reporting, approximately 7.9 million tonnes of FFB were processed across its mill network.

Regarding CPO production, Wilmar does not disclose plantation and milling CPO output in a format directly comparable with that of the other two companies. This distinction is important given Wilmar’s globally integrated palm oil processing and trading operations.

2. BUMITAMA AGRI: MANAGING 184,467 HECTARES OF OIL PALM PLANTATIONS

Bumitama Agri is an Indonesian-focused palm oil plantation company established in 1996 and listed on the Singapore Exchange in 2012. The group has historical ties to the Harita Group.

At the end of 2025, Bumitama managed a total planted oil palm area of 184,467 hectares, entirely located in Indonesia. Its plantations are concentrated in Central Kalimantan and West Kalimantan.

Approximately 94.7% of its total planted area had reached maturity, with an average plantation age of around 14.4 years.

Throughout 2025, Bumitama recorded approximately 3.4 million tonnes of FFB production from its nucleus and plasma plantations. Meanwhile, total FFB processed by its 17 palm oil mills reached 5.65 million tonnes, including supplies from smallholders and independent third-party suppliers.

From these processing activities, Bumitama recorded CPO deliveries of approximately 1.18 million tonnes during 2025. The company also delivered around 254,000 tonnes of palm kernel (PK).

Bumitama has an FFB processing capacity of approximately 1,165 tonnes per hour, equivalent to nearly 7 million tonnes annually. Its oil extraction rate (OER) reached 22.2% in 2025.

These figures demonstrate that Bumitama’s strength is not solely derived from its plantation assets, but also from its substantial processing network, which supports its palm oil production activities.

3. FIRST RESOURCES: CPO PRODUCTION REACHES 1.3 MILLION TONNES

First Resources is a Singapore-based palm oil plantation group listed on the Singapore Exchange, with ownership links to the Fangiono family.

As of the end of 2025, First Resources had a total planted oil palm area of 272,616 hectares. Its plantations are located across Riau, West Kalimantan, and East Kalimantan.

This represented an increase from 215,128 hectares in 2024. The expansion was partly supported by the acquisition of PT Austindo Nusantara Jaya Tbk. (ANJ) in May 2025.

Operationally, First Resources recorded FFB production of 4.68 million tonnes in 2025, representing a 23.2% increase compared with 3.80 million tonnes in the previous year.

The increase in FFB production also supported CPO output growth, with production reaching 1.30 million tonnes, up 29.8% from 1.00 million tonnes in 2024.

First Resources’ FFB yield reached 20.8 tonnes per hectare of mature plantation, while CPO productivity stood at approximately 4.5 tonnes per hectare.

These results reflect significant growth in the group’s production capacity, particularly following the contribution of ANJ’s plantation assets to its business operations.

COMPETITION AMONG THE THREE GROUPS IN INDONESIA’S PALM OIL INDUSTRY

The three groups have different business characteristics and operational strengths.

Wilmar International stands out through its integrated business model, covering plantations, processing, trading, and downstream products. Bumitama Agri has a strong plantation base in Kalimantan, supported by 17 palm oil mills. Meanwhile, First Resources has demonstrated significant production growth following the expansion of its plantation portfolio through acquisitions.

In terms of global planted area, First Resources ranks first with 272,616 hectares, followed by Wilmar International with 234,334 hectares and Bumitama Agri with 184,467 hectares.

However, these figures do not fully represent plantation ownership and operations within Indonesia, as part of Wilmar’s plantation assets are located overseas.

With their extensive plantation areas, processing capacities, and substantial production volumes, these three groups remain important players in Indonesia’s palm oil industry.

Investment developments, plantation productivity, palm oil mill expansion, and downstream industry integration will remain important factors in determining their competitive positions in the years ahead.
