Sukanto Tanoto, Indonesia’s Richest From Palm Oil Business

Indonesian Palm Oil News (IPO News) – Born in Belawan, Medan, North Sumatra on 25 December 1949, Sukanto Tanoto AKA Tan Kang Ho is the eldest of seven brothers, namely Sugianto Tanoto, Hermanto Tanoto, Hendrawan Tanoto, Rudy Santoso Tanoto, Polar Yanto Tanoto (deceased) and Suyono Santoto Tanoto. His father was an immigrant from Fujian province, mainland China. In 1966, Sukanto Tanoto was forced to stop school after Chinese schools at that time were closed by the New Order regime, President Soeharto.He could not continue his studies at a national school because his father was still a Chinese citizen at that time.

Sukanto Tanoto is the owner of Asian Agri which is one of the largest palm oil producers in Asia with an annual production capacity of 1 million tons of palm oil. Palm oil is a versatile product and Asian Agri believes that palm oil must be produced sustainably in accordance with economic, social and environmental sustainability.

From 160,000 hectares of oil palm plantations owned by Asian Agri, 60,000 hectares were developed using the intiplasma scheme, a national program to support farmers. Asian Agri partners with more than 30,000 farmers and independent farmers to have a positive impact on farmer welfare and economic development.

Asian Agri is a member of the RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil). Asian Agri is also committed to preserving areas with high carbon stock (HCS) and high conservation value (HCV) and respecting the rights of communities, workers and farmers.

Asian Agri’s plants are technologically advanced and use their own energy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. There are five Biogas Power Plants (PLTBg) with methane capture technology to produce energy for Asian Agri operations and surrounding communities. Asian Agri targeted the construction of 20 PLTBg which will produce 36 MW of electricity by the end of 2020.

According to Forbes that in 2020 Sukanto Tanoto’s wealth reached US$ 1.35 billion or around Rp. 19.07 trillion and placed him in the 22nd richest person in Indonesia in 2020. In 2023 his wealth rose rapidly to US$ 2.7 billion or Rp. 41 trillion and it is predicted that in 2024 his wealth will exceed Rp. 50 trillion.
