Indonesian Palm Oil News (IPO News) – The Sampoerna conglomerate began from a small business owned by Liem Seeng Tee, which was one of the first businesses in Indonesia to make and market hand-rolled kretek cigarettes (SKT) under the Dji Sam Soe brand. This cigarette business has grown. In 1930, this home industry was inaugurated with the formation of NVBM Handel Maatschapij Sampoerna.

In 1959, Aga Sampoerna AKA Liem Swie Ling, who was the second generation of the Sampoerna family, continued the Sampoerna business. At that time, the company focused on producing SKT by launching a number of products known as sampoerna kretek.

Putera Sampoerna is the son of Aga Sampoerna. Aga Sampoerna him self is the son of Lim Seng Tee,founder of the Sampoerna cigarette company. Since childhood, Putra has been used to living alone abroad. He spent his childhood and adolescence in Hong Kong and Australia. He then moved to America to continue his education at the University of Houston, Texas. So you could say that Putera Sampoerna is the third generation of the Sampoerna family in Indonesia.

Putra received his first international education at the Diocesan Boys’ School, Hong Kong, and then at Carey Baptist Grammar School, Melbourne. He then continued his higher education at the University of Houston, Texas, United States. Graduating from college in 1968, Putera did not immediately involve himself in the family business. Together with his wife, Katie, an American citizen of Chinese extraction, Putera lives in Singapore and runs a company which manages oil palm plantations owned by Malaysian entrepreneurs. Only in 1980, Putera returned to Surabaya to join the operations of PT HM Sampoerna Tbk.

Through a new business group called the Sampoerna Strategic Group, the various businesses run by Putera Sampoerna are under the auspices of the Sampoerna Strategic Group as the parent company. So far there are five business sectors under the parent company, namely plantations, finance, property, telecommunications, and the wood processing industry.

Then through PT. Sampoerna Agro Tbk (formerly known as PT. Selapan Jaya), a subsidiary of Sampoerna Strategic, successfully listed its shares on the Indonesia Stock Exchange on 18 June 2007. Currently PT. Sampoerna Agro Tbk together with its subsidiaries is one of the largest producers of palm oil and palm kernel in Indonesia.

In 2020, Putera Sampoerna was crowned by Forbes as Indonesia’s 13th richest person with wealth of US$ 1.7 billion. In 2023, Putera Sampoerna will be the 27th richest person in Indonesia with a wealth of US$ 1.85 billion and it is predicted that in 2024 his wealth will reach US$ 2 billion.
