Amid this sustainability agenda, public attention has also focused on the legal case involving PT Musim Mas in Pelalawan, Riau.

On 18 May 2026, the Riau Regional Police’s Directorate of Special Criminal Investigation named PT Musim Mas a corporate suspect in an alleged environmental crime case.

The case concerns alleged palm oil plantation activities within the riparian zone of the Air Hitam River, a tributary of the Nilo River, Estate IV Division F, Air Hitam Village, Ukui District, Pelalawan Regency.

According to investigators, the opening and planting of oil palm in the area allegedly began around 1997–1998, while the plantations reportedly began producing in 2002.

The Riau Police stated that the investigation was conducted using a scientific crime investigation approach and involved experts from several fields, including forestry, water resources, environmental science, soil degradation, environmental criminal law, and corporate law.

One figure that has drawn attention is the alleged environmental damage estimated at approximately Rp187.86 billion, based on an expert assessment cited by investigators.

Investigators also stated that various documents had been secured, including company documents, environmental impact assessment documents, HGU land-rights maps, area maps, and documents related to environmental management.

Nevertheless, it is important to emphasize that all of these allegations remain part of an ongoing legal process. Being designated as a suspect does not constitute a finding of guilt, and there has been no court ruling declaring PT Musim Mas guilty.

Musim Mas Responds and Respects the Legal Process

Musim Mas has also responded to its designation as a corporate suspect.

The company stated that it respects the legal process being conducted by the Riau Police and is prepared to cooperate throughout every stage of the investigation.

Musim Mas has also stated that its operations have been supported by the necessary permits and have been conducted within the applicable legal framework. The company further noted that it had conducted conservation studies since 2007 to support environmental protection, including areas along river riparian zones.

This position is important in presenting a balanced report, as it provides perspectives from both sides: the law enforcement authorities and their investigation findings, as well as the company’s explanation and response.

The Case File Remains Under Review

The legal case is still ongoing.

In July 2026, after investigators completed the instructions provided by prosecutors, the case file was resubmitted to the Riau High Prosecutor’s Office for review.

However, subsequent developments showed that the case had not yet reached the trial stage.

On 3 August 2026, the Riau High Prosecutor’s Office returned the case file to the Riau Police investigators because certain matters still needed to be completed. Prosecutors and investigators subsequently coordinated regarding the completeness of the case materials.

This means that, as of mid-September 2026, the case remains under legal process and has not yet been declared complete for prosecution.

This development is important for the industry because legal proceedings involving a major corporation require comprehensive evidence and due process before the case can move to the next stage.

Sustainability Recognition

Interestingly, amid the ongoing legal process, Musim Mas has also received recognition for its sustainability agenda.

In August 2026, Musim Mas received the Mahayuga Award 2026 in the Green Industry Pioneer category.

The award recognizes companies considered capable of building future competitiveness not only through business and production performance, but also through positive contributions to the environment and future generations.

This situation illustrates the complexity of the journey faced by a major company such as Musim Mas.

On one side, the company continues to strengthen its sustainability policies and has received recognition for its efforts. On the other, it is facing an environmental legal process that must be addressed transparently and in accordance with the rule of law.
