Indonesian Palm Oil News (IPO News) – According to IPO News observation that BGA has taken many positive steps to assist the community in dealing with COVID-19. BGA through several subsidiaries such as PT. Karya Makmur Bahagia (KMB), PT. Langgeng Makmur Sejahtera (LMS), PT. Tanah Tani Lestari, PT. Windu Nabati Abadi (WNA), PT. Windu Nabati Lestari, PT. Windu Nabati Sejahtera (WNS), and PT. Nabatindo Karya Utama (NKU) made various efforts to improve local food security, if at any time the government imposed a local lockdown status. This is in line with the letter of the Regent of Kotim No. 500/141/Ek.SDA/III/2020.
BGA is also active in maintaining biodiversity and forest conservation. Through the Bumitama Biodiversity and Community Project (BBCP), BGA carries out a forest conservation program in an 8,000 hectare conservation area, seed maintenance, forest corridor maintenance in order to facilitate access to various areas in conservation areas and integrated pond management covering an area of 10 hectares located right at the entrance of the corridor of wildlife potential, subsequently restoring nearly 2,000 hectares of degraded forest area. By 2020 BBCP had reforested 35 hectares, planting nearly 20,000 seedlings of native tree species.
To speed up the reforestation program, BGA started exploring alternative but innovative reforestation methods which utilize UAVs (unmanned aircraft) to disperse tree seeds, as the terrain conditions were too dangerous to navigate. This trial will test several types of seeds from local species which imitate natural forests. Meanwhile, the outer buffer zone of the conservation area will open up opportunities for local communities to harvest nontimber forest products (NTFPs) such as honey, medicinal plants, fruits and nuts. If proven successfully, this method will provide better cost and work efficiency than manual reforestation. BGA has reserved several reforestation areas which will be carried out through a partnership program with local communitiesl.
