Indonesian Palm Oil News (IPO News) – Definition of Palm Kernel Oil (PKO)
Palm Kernel Oil (PKO) is one of the important products derived from oil palm. In the palm oil industry, PKO plays a significant role and offers numerous applications across various sectors, including the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. This article explores PKO in greater depth, covering its definition, benefits, and production process.
PKO is an oil extracted from the palm kernel, also known as the kernel of the oil palm fruit. The palm kernel is similar in shape and size to an almond, with a yellowishwhite color. PKO has a thicker and more solid texture than other types of palm oil. It should be noted that PKO has a different fatty acid composition from palm oil, with a higher content of saturated fatty acids.
Palm Kernel Oil (PKO) Production Process
The production process of Palm Kernel Oil (PKO) involves several stages that must be carried out to produce highquality oil. The following are the stages involved in the production of PKO.
Palm Kernel Separation
The first stage in the production process of Palm Kernel Oil (PKO) is the separation of the palm kernel from the shell. The palm kernel is separated using a palm nut cracker or palm nut cracking machine. Once separated, the palm kernel is ready for further processing.
Palm Kernel Processing
The separated palm kernels are then processed using a crusher to extract kernel oil. This processing stage involves the extraction of oil from the palm kernels. The resulting kernel oil serves as the primary raw material for the production of Palm Kernel Oil (PKO).
Refined, Bleached, Deodorized (RBD)
After the processing stage, the kernel oil undergoes the Refining, Bleaching, and Deodorizing (RBD) process to produce highquality Palm Kernel Oil (PKO). This stage involves refining the oil, removing its color, and eliminating its odor. The final product is clear, odorless, and tasteless PKO.
Number of Palm Kernel Oil (PKO) Plants
Currently, there are approximately 650 companies operating in the Palm Kernel Oil (PKO) industry, most of which are located outside Java, particularly on the islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan. In general, these PKO plants are integrated with oil palm plantations and other palm oil processing industries.
In terms of production capacity, PT ACE Plantation and Industry, located in Pekanbaru, Riau, is among the largest, with an annual production capacity of 133,650 tons. It is followed by PT Interbuana Perkasa Utama, located in Bengkalis, Dumai, Riau, with an annual production capacity of 97,000 tons. The third largest is PT Musim Mas, located in Medan, North Sumatra.
These companies generally produce not only Palm Kernel Oil (PKO) and Crude Palm Oil (CPO), but also downstream products such as Refined, Bleached and Deodorized (RBD) Olein, RBD Stearin, Palm Kernel Expeller (PKE), as well as oleochemical products including fatty acids, fatty alcohols, glycerin, soap noodles, biodiesel, and many other related products.
