Indonesian Palm Oil News (IPO News) – In recent years, crude palm oil (CPO) production from these companies has shown steady annual growth. According to the Plantation Statistics published by Statistics Indonesia (BPS) that the production reached 45,121 million tons in 2021, continued to rise and peaked at 47,694 million tons in 2024. In 2025, the output is projected to climb further to 48,362 million tons. This upward trend aligns with the ongoing efforts of the government to strengthen downstream palm oil industries. In addition, the increase in production is also driven by growing domestic demand.

Development of Crude Palm Oil Exports

In addition to meeting domestic consumption, palm oil produced by these companies has also been widely exported to various countries. Amid the recent spike in cooking oil prices, the government announced tighter controls on crude palm oil (CPO) exports through a strict export registration mechanism. This policy, which took effect on 24 January 2022, requires exporters of CPO and olein to register their shipments so that the availability of cooking oil for the domestic market can be closely monitored.

The objective of this policy is to ensure sufficient domestic supplies of CPO and palm oil derivatives. The regulation is outlined in the Ministry of Trade Regulation No. 02/2021, which amends Regulation No. 19/2021 concerning Export Policies and Arrangements. This Ministerial Regulation shall come into force on January 24, 2022.

This regulation rules the export of Crude Palm Oil (CPO), Refined, Bleached, and Deodorized (RBD) Palm Olein, and Used Cooking Oil (UCO) which must go through a business licensing mechanism called Export Registration (PE). This is not an outright ban or restriction on CPO or olein exports. However, it ensures that domestic availability is documented and monitored, while exports of olein and its derivatives remain properly recorded. To obtain a PE, exporters must meet certain requirements, including a Self Declaration Letter stating that the exporter has distributed CPO, RBD Palm Olein, and UCO for domestic needs, accompanied by sales contracts; an export plan for a period of six months and a domestic distribution plan for a period of six months.

Trend of Crude Palm Oil (CPO) Exports

According to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) that palm oil exports in 2021 totaled approximately 25,619,000 tons, valued at US$ 26,755 million. In 2022, this decreased slightly to 25,115,000 tons, valued at US$ 26,444 million. In 2023, there was a slight increase but in 2024 it dropped again to 21,600,000 tons, valued at US$ 20,012 million. In 2025, exports are expected to decline again, as exports from January to March were only recorded at 5,294,000 tons, meaning that the overall year is expected to reach 21,176,000 tons.
