Indonesian Palm Oil News (IPO News), Medan — The North Sumatra Provincial Government is continuing to expand economic cooperation opportunities with the United States, particularly in investment and trade. During a meeting with U.S. Consul General for Sumatra Lisa Podolny, North Sumatra Deputy Governor Surya introduced a number of investment opportunities in the province, as well as key plantation commodities, including palm oil.

The meeting was held at the North Sumatra Governor’s Office in Medan on Monday (September 21, 2026). Lisa Podolny was accompanied by David Muehlke, Political Section Chief at the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, and Lieutenant Colonel Romelo Delos Santos, Chief of the Military Group at the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta.

According to information received by Indonesian Palm Oil News (IPO NEWS) from the North Sumatra Provincial Government, Surya highlighted North Sumatra’s strategic position as one of the economic gateways in western Indonesia. The province has direct access to the Malacca Strait and the Indian Ocean, providing significant potential for international trade and investment development.

“We hope this visit can strengthen strategic partnerships, open new investment and trade opportunities, and further strengthen relations between the North Sumatra Provincial Government and the United States government,” Surya said.

SEI MANGKEI SEZ AND MEDAN INDUSTRIAL ESTATE

During the meeting, Surya introduced several areas considered to have potential for development with investors, including the Sei Mangkei Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Simalungun Regency and the Medan Industrial Estate (KIM). The Sei Mangkei SEZ has an important position in the development of industries based on plantation commodities. The area is also supported by connectivity to Kuala Tanjung Port and toll-road infrastructure linking the industrial zone with several ports.

For the palm oil industry, industrial estates and strong logistics infrastructure are important factors in developing downstream industries. North Sumatra not only has a strong plantation production base, but also opportunities to develop processing industries that generate higher value products.

Surya also introduced several leading plantation commodities from North Sumatra to the U.S. side, namely palm oil, coffee and benzoin.

THE U.S. IS ALREADY AN IMPORTANT MARKET FOR NORTH SUMATRA

The opportunity to strengthen economic relations with the United States is supported by the significant trade activity between North Sumatra and the U.S. market. Statistics from Statistics Indonesia (BPS), as cited by ANTARA, showed that North Sumatra’s total exports throughout January-December 2025 reached US$12.396 billion, an increase of 14.78% compared with 2024.

Of this total, the United States was one of North Sumatra’s major export destinations, with exports reaching approximately US$1.505 billion, ranking second after China, which recorded approximately US$2.154 billion.

Notably, one of the commodity groups recording a significant increase in North Sumatra’s exports in 2025 was animal and vegetable fats and oils, which increased by approximately US$1.142 billion, or 27.92%.

These figures indicate that North Sumatra already has a substantial trade relationship with the United States. Therefore, the provincial government’s introduction of investment opportunities and palm oil commodities could become part of a broader effort to expand the relationship from trade toward investment and industrial cooperation.

PUSHING VALUE-ADDED COMMODITIES

The opportunities being offered are not limited to trading raw commodities. The development of industrial estates such as Sei Mangkei creates room for increasing the value of plantation commodities through processing and downstream industries.

For the palm oil sector, downstream development could cover a wide range of palm based products and derivatives. This means potential cooperation with foreign investors is not limited to CPO trading, but could also include the development of processing industries, technology and higher value products.

The North Sumatra Provincial Government has expressed its readiness to become an open and responsive partner in strengthening international cooperation that creates added value for regional development and improves community welfare.

BROADER U.S.-NORTH SUMATRA COOPERATION

Meanwhile, Lisa Podolny said that relations between the United States and North Sumatra have developed across various sectors. In addition to trade and investment, cooperation also covers education, human resource development, humanitarian programs and disaster preparedness.

Lisa highlighted cooperation through EducationUSA at Muhammadiyah University of North Sumatra (UMSU), the English Language Fellow program at Medan State University (UNIMED), and the ACCESS micro scholarship program through the University of North Sumatra (USU).

Humanitarian cooperation has also been carried out through Pacific Partnership, which previously visited Sibolga and Central Tapanuli. With an established trade relationship and North Sumatra’s strategic geographical position, the opening of new investment opportunities with the United States could further expand economic ties between the two sides.

For North Sumatra’s palm oil industry, the entry of new investment and technology could provide opportunities to strengthen downstream development, increase the value of plantation commodities and expand access to international markets.
